What Does A Typical Day Look Like?

A typical day as a security guard involves a combination of proactive monitoring, routine patrols, and ensuring the safety of people and property. Your day may begin with a briefing or handover from the previous shift, where you’ll be updated on any incidents, security concerns or special instructions.

 

Throughout the day, you’ll conduct regular patrols, either on foot or in a vehicle, to check for signs of suspicious activity, ensure access points are secure, and monitor surveillance equipment. You may also interact with visitors, staff, or the public to maintain a visible security presence and assist with any concerns or emergencies.

 

Depending on your assignment, you might be stationed at a specific post, where you’ll be responsible for monitoring entry and exit points or security systems. In the event of an emergency, you’ll need to respond quickly and calmly, following established procedures to resolve the situation.

 

At the end of your shift, you’ll complete incident reports, log your activities and ensure that all security protocols are maintained for the next team. Every day brings new challenges, but your role as a security guard remains crucial in keeping the environment safe and secure.

What Does It Take To Be A Security Guard?

To become a security guard, you need a combination of physical and mental skills. Physical fitness is important for patrolling, responding to incidents and standing for long periods. Strong observational skills help you spot potential security risks, while communication abilities are essential for reporting incidents and interacting with others.

 

You must also remain calm in high-pressure situations, be knowledgeable about security procedures and have a professional demeanor. Depending on the role, certification or training in areas like first aid, conflict resolution or security systems may be required. Ultimately, a security guard needs to be vigilant, reliable and committed to maintaining safety and order.

Do I Need Any Special Certifications?

Yes, to work as a security guard in British Columbia, you are required to hold a Security Worker License issued by the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. To obtain this license, you must complete an accredited Basic Security Training (BST) course, which covers topics such as emergency response, conflict resolution, legal rights and surveillance techniques.

 

Additionally, you must pass a criminal background check and be at least 19 years old. For certain roles, additional certifications, such as First Aid or Advanced Security Training, may be required or recommended. It’s important to stay updated with any training or license renewal requirements to maintain your eligibility to work in the field.
